South Texas Polka & Sausage Fest

Weekend of the 4th Sunday of March

Hallettsville, Texas is the place to be the weekend of the 4th Sunday of March every year.  It is a weekend filled with lots of food, fun and fellowship.  It is held at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Hallettsville, Texas and is a very popular event.   Polka lovers from all over the United States make this their annual 3 day celebration.

HISTORY

The South Texas Polka and Sausage Fest was the brainchild of three dedicated Knights of Columbus members.  Henry Pavliska, his brother Bobby Pavliska and Wence Shimek.  They felt that with the deep Czech and German heritages in our area, a Polka Fest would be a unique project for the Council.  Since these heritages are known for their faith, fun and food, the weekend of the 4th Sunday in March of 1980 the South Texas Polka and Sausage Fest was born and has today become one of the major annual events for the Knights of Columbus.

These men met again to infuse more interest in the project.  In 1983 the Fest became a two day celebration beginning with a Polka Mass followed by dancing and good old Czech food.

Friday night begins with a Fish Fry with all the trimmings followed by a night of Polka music and dancing.

Saturday the festivities begin with a Polka Mass celebrated at the hall in the afternoon followed by lots of fun, food and fellowship.  The Knights of Columbus serve a delicious meal consisting of sausage, sauerkraut, potatoes, chicken noodle soup and of course tasty Kolaches.  Starting at 5:00 p.m. Polka music will begin for dancing and fun until 11:00 p.m.

Sunday the fun starts at 10:30 a.m. with the same menu as Saturday with the addition of fried chicken.  Music continues throughout the day with various bands.  For the finale all the bands join together for a concert in the late afternoon.

Camper hook-ups are available at the hall and there are several motels in the area within driving distance for your overnight stay.  For more information visit www.kchall.com or call 361/798-2311.

The proceeds from the South Texas Polka and Sausage Fest benefit the Sacred Heart Catholic School Athletic program.  Because of the hard work of the athletes, their parents and the tireless Knights of Columbus members, Sacred Heart Catholic School has realized thousands of dollars from this special project.

“A fun filled weekend with great Czech food, music and dancing for the ENTIRE family in a small town atmosphere.”  Come meet up with old friends or come make new friends either way a good time will be had by all.
